It starts with a block of wood, four wheels and four axles, and ends Wednesday, May 7th in an 80-car, gravity- and alcohol-fueled single-elimination race. It’s the 5th annual charity event dedicated to fast cars and loose livers.

A conversation with Creative Director Dave Allen about his inspiration … and information dispelling some of the myths, confusion and skepticism surrounding the growing market of streaming music. Dave is a founding member of the post-punk band Gang of Four, label founder, and tech visionary with extensive experience and expertise on the intersection and evolution of music and technology. “A Conversation With” is hosted by Erin Lynch of The Portland Egotist and Yvonne Perez Emerson of WeMake.

How does fashion and clothing engage craft – technically, materially, and conceptually – in the design, production, circulation, use, and reuse of garments? Leveraging craft as a framework, Fashioning Cascadia collapses clothing and fashion, bringing together the tangible utility of clothing with the creativity and cultural import of fashion in the Cascadian region.

Wild Films: Moog

Dr. Robert Moog shaped musical culture with some of the most inspiring electronic instruments ever created. This “compelling documentary portrait of a provocative, thoughtful and deeply sympathetic figure” (New York Times) peeks into the inventor’s mind and the worldwide phenomenon he fomented. The “one man synthesizer attack squad” Solovox will play before the film screening.

Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem is an animated musical fantasy film based on the Daft Punk album “Discovery.” Supervised by Leiji Matsumoto, the legendary anime/manga creator, the film follows the the plight of talented musicians from a neighboring galaxy who are brought to earth by an evil corporation. Stripped of their immense talents, they are turned into a band of emotionless, hit-churning automatons named The Crescendolls. Jeremy Heilman of MovieMartyr.com calls the film “a futurist Fantasia that incidentally beats the pants off of Disney’s own Fantasia 2000.”

In concert with the summer-long “Fashioning Cascadia” exhibit, we are proud to feature some of the designers who continue to make Portland a leader in the independent fashion industry.
